| | Get
away from the crowds and visit the "real" Roatan. Oak Ridge is a true Caribbean fishing village, home port to numerous shrimp and lobster
boats. You won't find crowds of tourists and rows of kiosks hawking their wares.
You will find beautiful vistas, a charming look at a unique island lifestyle,
and friendly people. Oak Ridge has been called the "Venice of the
Caribbean" because most buildings are on the water and travel in the community
is mainly by boat.

| B.J.
started her restaurant 25 years ago to serve the seamen working in the shrimping
industry, and B.J.s Backyard now enjoys a world wide reputation for good, fresh
island food, very reasonable prices, and a friendly, comfortable ambience. The
new covered dining deck next to B.J.s garden hangs over the water, offering views
of Oak Ridge Key, the boating channel, and a truly unique and interesting experience.

| | In nearby Jonesville, the
mangrove canal was dug many years ago to link harbors and bays in the area, enabling
small boats to commute among them without the need to go into the sea outside
the reef. Who built the canal is lost to history. Traveling by dory through
the tunnels shows a rare glance into a unique ecosystem, as well as interesting
parts of Roatan accessible only by boat.
 |
| Dories can be hired at B.J.s Backyard dock to travel inside the reef in calm Caribbean waters, and
through the village of Jonesville where they enter the mangrove canal; the canal
passes through lagoons and bights all the way to Caribe Point. The full transit
lasts a little over an hour, but you can arrange a tour to suit your time constraints and sightseeing preferences.

40 minutes BJ's Backyard in Oak Ridge, during which you will
see many points of interest, amazing sights, and panoramic
sea views of Roatan. There are places on the ridge top highway where you can actually
see both sides of the island.
